How to Take Care of Your Baby’s Skin

Baby’s skin is very soft, smooth and fine. There is more chance of rash, irritation, skin breakdown or scratch in a baby’s skin. Many babies are prone to rash and allergic skin problems even due to diapers as diaper is generally moist and warm. There may be some rashes found in baby’s skin. So, it is very important to find out the skin problems and managed them properly to keep your baby well.

How to care baby skin

Inspect your baby’s skin:

The skin is a protective layer of the body. It works as a barrier agent against dust, dirt, sunlight, bacteria and other environmental elements. But if it breaks down or damaged, it will lose its efficacy and cannot protect us from dust, sunlight or infection. Inspect your baby’s skin carefully whether it becomes damaged or suffering from irritation, itching or rashes. Identify the areas which are very prone to rashes. The affected area skin looks red, raw and weepy and there may be tiny red bumps and itching.

Identify types of rashes:

There are various types of rashes may occur in a baby’s skin. Perfectly identifying them will help you to manage them properly and effectively.

Intertigo: A rash occurs mainly around the neck, under arm, inner thigh and other skin folds. The skin looks red, moist and warm. It occurs due to skin to skin friction. It may be painful. Apply zinc oxide powder or cream or petroleum jelly in between skin surfaces in the folding area. This will prevent skin friction and gradually rash will disappear.

Dermatitis: There is contact dermatitis that is resulting from contact with soap or detergent. General soap and detergent is harmful to baby’s skin. They may irritate the skin of the baby. The skin looks red, itching and bumpy at the contact area. If the rash is dry, moisture it with petroleum jelly or olive oil. If it is itching, consult with a doctor for hydrocortisone cream or antihistamines.

Skin care seborrhea

Seborrhea: It is like dandruff mainly appear on scalp, eye brows, chest and neck. It may be thick, scaly on scalp, pimply on chest and neck, red bumpy on cheeks. Use olive oil on the affected area and gently rub oil on skin. Anti-dandruff shampoo may be used on head wash.

Clean the Baby’s Skin:

Baby’s skin should be kept clean by bathing him or her regularly. It is better to bath a baby two or three times. Use warm water to bath your baby. Don’t use hot or cold water. Don’t apply soap directly on skin, rather take a piece of soft cloth and wet it with soapy water, then use it gently to wash the skin and scalp. A soft cotton ball should be used to clean the face. A mild baby shampoo is used to wash the head. Lift the baby quickly from the bath tub and dry the skin with a soft towel.

Method of baby bathing

Be Careful Using Baby Care Products:

Be mindful while using baby care products for your baby. Use a tear free and less fragrance shampoo and baby soap for your baby. Watch your baby if there is any allergic reaction due to soap or shampoo.

After completing bath use a mild lotion to your baby’s skin. If it is a sunny day and you want to take your baby outside apply a minimum 30 SPF sunscreen cream 30 minutes before going to outside. It will protect your baby’s skin from sunlight.

In winter season to moisture your baby’s skin use a moisturizing baby lotion daily. Look for the best brand of baby lotion. This will protect your baby’s skin from dryness and harshness.

Dressing: Dress your baby with soft cotton made loose dresses. Tight synthetic made dresses may cause rash to the baby’s soft skin. Always try to choose comfortable baby wear. Proper clothing is very important to protect the skin of the baby from dirt, dust and sunlight also. Choose a colorful dress for your baby so that the baby will get pleasure.
